Mod Organizer Instructions

If you're looking for a guide to using Mod Organizer in general, you can find one here.

This is a guide for those of you using Mod Organizer who don't want to manage NMM as well. I do make the assumption that you know the basics of installing mods through MO and can figure out how the basic folder structure works. E.g. If there's a textures folder that has to be installed, I hope you can figure out where it goes. Just remember that MO uses the "\mods\" folder (the one with the meta.ini file inside) as the top-level Data folder that you'll add the folders to.

Bellyaches Animal Pack v1.6: Set "Packs\Bear\Data" as the top-level Data folder. I find it easier to use Windows to copy the other animals into the mod's folder, but either way use these choices:
Note: If not specified below, then use those files.
Note: For the Fox, Sabre Cat, Skeever, and Wolf it does not matter which normal map (xxx_n.dds) file is used, they're identical.
  • Bear: (Only the Data folder, not Polar Bear (blue eyes))
  • Chaurus:Black
  • Chicken: Barred
  • Dog: Brown and white
  • Fox: Silver AND Artic
  • Frostbite Spider: Gray AND Brown Striped
  • Goat: Shaggy\White
  • Hawk: Common Buzzard
  • Highland Cow: Black
  • Horker: Light Brown
  • Horse: (Only the Data folder, not Short Tails)
  • Mammoth: Brown
  • Mudcrab: Grey overwritten by Oblivion
  • Sabre Cat: Striped AND White Solid
  • Skeever: Brown AND White
  • Werewolf: Black AND Eyes\All Iris Brown
  • Wolf: Timber AND Light Gray

  • Static Mesh Improvement Mod v1.13: Set 00 Core as the top-level Data folder. Then copy 02 Vanilla Barrel Textures, 05 Food, 06 Signs 3D Rings, and 07 Whiterun Drawbridge 3D Rings.

Visible Windows v1.2: Set 00 Data - Required as the top-level Data folder. The rest of the folders can all be customized using the screenshots on the mod's Nexus page or the Fomod folder. For my preference while remaining close to Vanilla copy 10 Solitude Gritty, 30 Whiterun Gritty, 31 Whiterun Night Yellow, 52 Riften Day Blue, and 60 High Hrothgar Gritty.

Realistic Water Textures v2.0: Set 00 Data - Required as the top-level Data folder. The other folders are optional/preference, although I suggest 50 Reduced Spash.

Extended Slider Colors v4.6: Install Extended Colors.ESM AND one of the following:
  • Selection.esp: Adds all colors to all sliders.
  • Less Slection.esp: Adds less colors to all sliders except hair.
  • Lite Selection.esp: Adds significantly less colors to all sliders.
  • Hair Only.esp: Adds color to hair only.
  • From the Languages folder, open the folder that corresponds to your ESP choice above followed by your desired language. Then copy that Strings folder.

Skill Interface Retexture v2.0.0: Download the optional Manual Installation file. Set "options\star_background\\Data" as the top-level Data folder. From constellation_overlays, perk_lines, and perk_stars select one option from each. Screenshots can be found in the Screenshots folder.

Nightingale Retex - Black Sacrament v2.7: Copy the Meshes folder, BlackSacramentArmor.esp, and your choice of the "<HD or SD>\Textures" folder. The rest of the folders aren't needed.

Better Sorting v2.04: When installing the mod, click Manual and select ONLY ONE of the Food, Potions, and Soul Gem ESPs. Ammo, Books, Ingredients, Misc and Spells should all be enabled.

SkyUI v2.2: Should install just fine through MO. If you want to use one of the alternate icon sets or the (highly recommended) Value/Weight column, they're in SkyUI Extras folder, just copy the SWF and/or CFG files to the mod's Interface folder and overwrite.

    1. What do you mean by 'overwrite'? In MO manual install if move two files with same name into the one folder then both files show up in the file tree and I am not sure which one gets priority on install.
Do you mean unselect original file, drag and drop in new file so it is selected?

      1. I've updated the guide to hopefully clear that up. For this mod it does not matter which normal map is selected since they're the same, but in general, I have no idea how MO would handle the conflict.

The files were compiled by the author so that it would work no matter which preference you selected, so there are a few redundant normal maps between the different skins. For this mod I found it easier to just copy/paste the files over in Windows, dealing with MO's installer can be annoying sometimes.

    2. Farlo I have converted the MO guide into a wiki on Tannin42's external site, links are as follows:
      - Home page: http://issue.tannin.eu/tbg/wiki/Modorganizer%3AMainPage
      - Guide to using MO: http://issue.tannin.eu/tbg/wiki/Introduction_to_Mod_Organizer
      - Tips pages to come soon-ish.

Did you want to link to that off this page?

    3. Ahh, Tannin changed the wiki structure. New guide page is http://issue.tannin.eu/tbg/wiki/ModOrganizer%3AIntroduction_to_Mod_Organizer

    4. Can I just clarify: Installing mods with MO that have already been downloaded manually to local HDD is possible but "mod id" and "version number" should be edited... does the mod retain the Nexus 'id' through all versions? I tend not to update mods in beta or for trivial tweaks/features. I certainly prefer not to download every mod again through MO.
Also, presumably manual download alters the archive file date, I assume this is irrelevant as the archived files retain their original 'modified on' date (time stamp) - as this may affect priority against .bsa. Or does using MO circumvent this issue in some way?

If my assumptions are wrong please say ;) and if you don't know np I'll drop the question into the MO forum B)

      1. For the latest STEP I downloaded them all manually, although it figured out most of the IDs fairly well. You might have to put in the version number manually though. If you update through MO it should keep everything on track.

The file modification date shouldn't matter since BSAs are loaded after all the loose files regardless and the loose files are "installed" in the order of the priority in MO. That's one of the biggest problems with the Workshop since all the mods must be in ESP/BSA format, so there's no way to manage load order aside from the ESP priority.

      2. It should be possible, although any loose files that got overwritten by other mods will be lost. First, I'd suggest you search Nexus for any of your mods and download/install them again through MO (make sure to use the loose files version!). That should work for most mods, but for those that are Steam-exclusive, you'll have to package the BSA(s) and ESP(s) of the mod into a ZIP and then install that with MO.

    6. The "Nightingale Retex - Black Sacrament v2.7" instructions could be more helpful, as there's several folders. I think we need the esp, the meshes folder and then we have to choose either sd/textures or hd/textures and move that to the mod folder. I think we can also delete fembody, fomod and replacer. I'm not sure though as STEP just says "don't use any replacer" but I don't know if the fembody folder gets used when installing with NMM.

With Extended Slider Colors, you also need the Strings folder for whichever option you select, so e.g. if you were using "Extended Colors - Selection.esp" you'd need to move Languages\Extended Colors - Selection\English\Strings up to the mod folder.

      1. I forgot to update this guide for the new Black Sacrament update, thanks for pointing that out, I just fixed it. You're right: unless you're using CBBE/UNP then you only need the Meshes, Textures (of your choice), and the ESP.

The reason the instructions for Extended Sliders didn't look right was because I screwed up the HTML, so I fixed that. Look good now?

    7. Are these steps no longer necessary with the optional file that simulates the NMM installer?
